Consumer/Non-Cyclical Sector Wrap

During trading today, the S&P 500 dropped 0.8%, and the Consumer/Non-Cyclical sector (XLP) showed little change.

While being down today, the ETF, as a proxy for sector performance, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLP was up 1.9% over the last thirty trading days while the S&P 500 was down 5%.

S&W Seed Company (SANW) was a major loser in the sector, falling 8.6% (-51 cents) to close at $5.39 with 22,243 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $5.30 to $5.59.

SunOpta (STKL) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 4.6% (+25 cents) to close at $5.73 with 422,998 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $5.46 to $5.79. The stock has seen some positive movement recently as shares are up 62 cents (12.1%) from a price of $5.11 on August 16, 2012.

Avon Products (AVP) fell 2.7% to close at $15.50, crossing its 50-day moving average of $15.80. Meanwhile, Ralcorp Holdings (RAH) climbed 2% to close at $69.76, moving past its 200-day moving average of $69.52.

Cresud S.A.C.I.F. y A. (CRESY) rose 2.7% to close at $8.31, approaching its 50-day moving average of $8.35. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $9.49. Dr Pepper Snapple Group (IPAR) fell 1.5% to close at $44.67, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $44.61. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $16.52.

Lancaster Colony (LANC) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $74.53 to top the previous high of $72.72.
