Energy Sector Wrap

The Energy sector (XLE) showed little movement while the S&P 500 gained 0.1% during trading today.

As a proxy for the sector, the ETF tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLE was up 9.7% over the last thirty trading days. The S&P 500, in comparison, went up 4.8%.

Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 15.1%. The stock closed at $7.25 with 30.8 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $6.15 to $7.36.

Rhino Resource Partners L.P (RNO) rose 7.1% to close at $14.54, cross its 50-day moving average of $13.88 and 200-day moving average of $16.47. Petrobras Argentina SA ADR (PZE) declined 3.9% to close at $9.21, moving below its 50-day moving average of $8.24 and 200-day moving average of $10.64.

Lufkin Industries (LUFK) rose 4.2% to close at $52.15, approaching its 50-day moving average of $52.64. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $64.69. Continental Resources (CLR) rose 3.4% to close at $71.96, getting closer to its 200-day moving average or $75.33.

Alon USA Energy (ALJ) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 9.2% (-$1.14) to close at $11.30, as 696,360 shares moved. The stock traded between $11.12 and $12.32.

Delek US Holdings (DK) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $26.40 to top the previous high of $24.10.
