While the S&P 500 grew 0.2%, the Basic Materials sector (XLB) showed little movement during trading today.
Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation (CDE) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 8.1% (+$1.30) to close at $17.43 with 2.1 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $16.21 to $17.72. Shares are down over the last two months as the price has dropped $1.36 (-7.2%) from a price of $18.79 on June 7, 2012. Similarly, First Majestic Silver (AG) gained today, increasing $1.17 (+7.2%) to close at $17.33.
Gevo (GEVO) was one of the sector's big losers, as its price dropped 8% (-32 cents) to close at $3.68. 1.3 million shares of the stock moved. The stock traded in a range of $3.41 to $4.68.
Allied Nevada Gold (ANV) rose 4% to close at $27.84, cross its 50-day moving average of $27.21 and 200-day moving average of $29.54. Carpenter Technology Corporation (CRS) climbed 2.5% to close at $49.62, moving past its 200-day moving average of $49.61.
Ternium (TX) rose 6.4% to close at $18.75, approaching its 50-day moving average of $19.16. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $20.86. US Steel (X) rose 5.6% to close at $22.94, getting closer to its 200-day moving average or $24.18.
Westlake Chemical Corporation (WLK) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $68.40 to top the previous high of $66.92.
