Basic Materials Sector Wrap

On a trading day that saw the S&P 500 gain 1.6%, the Basic Materials sector (XLB) showed little change.

The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past week. Going into trading today, XLB was down 3.3% over the last seven trading days while the S&P 500 went up -1.1%.

BioFuel Energy (BIOF) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 15.9% (-50 cents) to close at $2.65, as 202,652 shares moved. The stock traded between $2.60 and $3.56.

Kaiser Aluminum (KALU) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 8.9% (+$4.41) to close at $53.92 with 496,841 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $50.79 to $55.43. Shares have been on an upward trajectory over the past month, rising $4.28 (8.6%) from a price of $49.64 on June 26, 2012.

Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM) rose 8.1% to close at $42.09, cross its 50-day moving average of $39.34 and 200-day moving average of $37.67. Methanex Corporation (MEOH) declined 1.5% to close at $28.22, moving below its 50-day moving average of $28.37 and 200-day moving average of $29.22.

Reliance Steel & Aluminum (RS) rose 6.9% to close at $48.10, approaching its 50-day moving average of $48.52. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $51.20. Balchem Corporation (BCPC) fell 4% to close at $32.59, moving down to 0.5% above its 200-day moving average of $32.43.

Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $3.57 to fall below the previous low of $3.92.
