The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. As trading began today, XLU was up 3.2% over the last thirty trading days, and the S&P 500 climbed 2%.
TransAlta Corporation (TAC) declined 4.8% to close at $16.44, moving below its 50-day moving average of $16.94 and 200-day moving average of $18.19. Genon Energy (GEN) climbed 25.8% to close at $2.29, moving past its 200-day moving average of $2.04.
Atlas Energy (ATLS) fell 2.7% to close at $31.38, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $31.22. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $30.99. DCP Midstream Partners (DPM) rose 0.2% to close at $42.55, getting closer to its 200-day moving average or $43.72.
NRG Energy (NRG) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 8.1% (+$1.47) to close at $19.52 with 22.1 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $19.22 to $20.12. Share price is up, having risen $4.26 (27.9%) from $15.26 on June 21, 2012.
Delta Natural Gas Company (DGAS) was one of the sector's big losers, as its price dropped 5.1% (-$1.15) to close at $21.35. 12,307 shares of the stock moved. The stock traded in a range of $21.24 to $22.93.
