Basic Materials Sector Wrap

The Basic Materials sector (XLB) showed little change during trading today while the S&P 500 rose 0.3%.

Georgia Gulf Corporation (GGC) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 13.2% (+$3.82) to close at $32.67 with 6.4 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $32.02 to $34. Share price has been increasing, and is up $5.93 (22.2%) from a price of $26.74 on July 12, 2012.

Renewable Energy Group (REGI) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 9.1% (-73 cents) to close at $7.25, as 51,633 shares moved. The stock traded between $7.17 and $8.00.

First Majestic Silver (AG) rose 6.3% to close at $15.46, cross its 50-day moving average of $14.80 and 200-day moving average of $16.16. CompX International (CIX) declined 7.4% to close at $12.47, moving below its 50-day moving average of $12.73 and 200-day moving average of $13.74.

Valhi (VHI) rose 10% to close at $12.67, approaching its 50-day moving average of $13.22. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $37.92. Tredegar Corporation (DEL) fell 2.5% to close at $14.43, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $14.34. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $61.85.

PPG Industries (PPG) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $112.18 to top the previous high of $107.95.
