The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past week. Going into trading today, the S&P 500 was up 2% over the last seven trading days, but XLV was up 0.9%.
ShangPharma (SHP) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 15.6% (+$1.07) to close at $7.95 with 162,081 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $7.80 to $8.40. Share price is up, having risen $1.89 (31.2%) from $6.06 on June 6, 2012.
Charles River Laboratories (CRL) fell 3.1% to close at $33.21, crossing its 50-day moving average of $33.05. Meanwhile, Flamel Technologies (FLML) climbed 6.1% to close at $5.36, moving past its 200-day moving average of $5.14.
Shire Plc. (SHPGY) rose 0.7% to close at $84.82, approaching its 50-day moving average of $88.37. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $95.88. Fresenius Medical Care AG & (FMS) fell 1.5% to close at $68.92, moving down to 0.2% above its 200-day moving average of $68.82.
MAKO Surgical (MAKO) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 3.9% (-97 cents) to close at $23.89, as 1.4 million shares moved. The stock traded in a range of $23.28 to $24.98.
XOMA Corporation (XOMA) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $4.13 to top the previous high of $3.48.
