During trading today, the S&P 500 dropped 0.5%, and the Consumer/Non-Cyclical sector (XLP) showed little change.
As a proxy for the sector, the ETF tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLP was up 5.3% over the last thirty trading days. The S&P 500, in comparison, went up 6%.
Feihe International (ADY) was a major loser in the sector, falling 10.3% (-71 cents) to close at $6.19 with 863,360 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $5.80 to $6.93.
MGPI Processing (MGPI) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 9.2% (+30 cents) to close at $3.55 with 19,756 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $3.24 to $3.60.
Smithfield Foods (SFD) declined 4% to close at $20.72, moving below its 50-day moving average of $20.33 and 200-day moving average of $21.62. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) rose 4.7% to close at $23.53, crossing its 50-day moving average of $23.00.
Ennis (EBF) fell 4.9% to close at $15.37, moving down to 1.9% above its 200-day moving average of $15.07. Avon Products (AVP) rose 4.4% to close at $16.65, getting closer to its 200-day moving average or $18.39.
Smart Balance (SMBL) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $10.83 to top the previous high of $10.44.
