The Technology sector (XLK) held steady during a trading day that saw the S&P 500 grow 2.5%.
Although down today, the ETF, as a as a proxy for sector performance, tracked closer to the overall market than over the past week. Going into trading today, XLK was up 0.9% over the last seven trading days while the S&P 500 was down 2%.
AZZ Incorporated (AZZ) rose 19.4% to close at $61.26, cross its 50-day moving average of $52.61 and 200-day moving average of $50.02. SMART Technologies (SMT) declined 6.7% to close at $1.82, moving below its 50-day moving average of $1.68 and 200-day moving average of $2.84.
VMware (VMW) rose 8.3% to close at $91.04, approaching its 50-day moving average of $94.15. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $98.33. magicJack VocalTec (CALL) fell 1% to close at $19, moving down to 1.9% above its 200-day moving average of $18.64.
CalAmp (CAMP) was a major loser in the sector, falling 12.7% (-$1.07) to close at $7.33 with 1.6 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $7 to $8.
Tibco Software (TIBX) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 11.5% (+$3.09) to close at $29.92 with 8.4 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $28.05 to $29.96. Shares are up, having risen $3.23 (12.1%) from a price of $26.69 on June 22, 2012. Baidu (BIDU) and Cerner (CERN) also made significant gains in the sector.
Cymer (CYMI) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $58.95 to top the previous high of $57.99.
EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering (EXFO) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $4.89 to fall below the previous low of $5.07.
