The Basic Materials sector (XLB) held steady during a trading day that saw the S&P 500 grow 1.1%.

ADA-ES (ADES) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 6.3% (+$1.57) to close at $26.48 with 55,434 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $24.89 to $26.50. The stock has been on an upward trajectory over the last two months, rising $4.16 (18.6%) from a price of $22.32 on April 13, 2012.

Orient Paper (ONP) was a major loser in the sector, falling 5.7% (-14 cents) to close at $2.30 with 51,101 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $2.26 to $2.44.

Agrium (AGU) rose 4.9% to close at $82.52, cross its 50-day moving average of $81.17 and 200-day moving average of $80.44.

Westlake Chemical Corporation (WLK) rose 4.8% to close at $52.43, approaching its 50-day moving average of $55.61. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $54.49.

Pope Resources L.P (POPE) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $54 to top the previous high of $53.70.

KiOR (KIOR) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $6.34 to fall below the previous low of $6.50.
