Utilities Sector Wrap

The Utilities sector (XLU) showed little movement while the S&P 500 gained 2.2% during trading today.

The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLU was up 2.7% over the last thirty trading days. The S&P 500, in comparison, went up -3.7%.

TransAlta Corporation (TAC) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 4.9%. The stock closed at $16.93 with 162,785 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $16.10 to $16.94. The stock is down over the last three months, having fallen $3.08 (-15.4%) from $20.01 on March 9, 2012.

Delta Natural Gas Company (DGAS) was a major loser in the sector, falling 4.4% (-92 cents) to close at $20.15 with 6,166 shares moving. The stock traded between $19.63 and $20.86.

PPL (PPL) fell 0.1% to close at $27.56, crossing its 50-day moving average of $27.36. Meanwhile, Targa Resources (TRGP) climbed 3.6% to close at $44.11, moving past its 200-day moving average of $42.60.

Chesapeake Midstream Partners L.P (CHKM) rose 4.6% to close at $25.28, approaching its 50-day moving average of $25.75. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $27.63. UniSource Energy (UNS) fell 0.8% to close at $37.33, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $36.50. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $36.73.

American Water Works (AWK) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $34.98 to top the previous high of $34.89.
