During trading today, the S&P 500 dropped 2.5%, and the Energy sector (XLE) showed little change.
Although it went in the opposite direction of the market today, the ETF tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLE was down 12.7% over the last thirty trading days while the S&P 500 was down 8.7%.
Tri-Valley Corporation (TIV) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 13.4%. The stock closed at 8 cents with 295,867 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of 7 cents to 9 cents.
Petroleum Development Corporation (PETD) was a major loser in the sector, falling 11.9% (-$2.95) to close at $21.89 with 756,928 shares moving. The stock traded between $21.82 and $24.22.
CREDO Petroleum Corporation (CRED) rose 4.1% to close at $10.86, crossing its 50-day moving average of $10.50.
Venoco (VQ) rose 3.2% to close at $9.63, approaching its 50-day moving average of $10.28. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $10.01.
CARBO Ceramics (CRR) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $74.58 to fall below the previous low of $79.54.
