Utilities Sector Wrap

The S&P 500 lost 1.5% while the Utilities sector (XLU) showed little movement during trading today.

Cheniere Energy (LNG) was a major loser in the sector, falling 8.1% (-$1.26) to close at $14.38 with 3.9 million shares moving. The stock traded between $14.21 and $15.40. The stock has been losing steam over the last month, dipping $3.93 (-21.5%) from a price of $18.31 on April 30, 2012.

Dynegy (DYN) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 6.1%. The stock closed at 45 cents with 1.4 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of 42 cents to 49 cents.

National Grid plc (NGG) declined 5.5% to close at $50.55, moving below its 50-day moving average of $53.07 and 200-day moving average of $50.90.

U.S. Geothermal (HTM) rose 2.5% to close at 41 cents, approaching its 50-day moving average of 42 cents. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of 45 cents. Huaneng Power International (SBS) fell 3.8% to close at $24.16, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $23.55. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $68.00.

TransAlta Corporation (TAC) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $16.09 to fall below the previous low of $16.13.
