The Basic Materials sector (XLB) showed little change during trading today while the S&P 500 rose 0.2%.
The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past week. Going into trading today, the S&P 500 was up -2.3% over the last seven trading days, but XLB was down 3.3%.
MOD-PAC CORP (MPAC) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 13.3% (+68 cents) to close at $5.78 with 5,215 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $5.10 to $5.78.
Terra Nitrogen Company L.P (TNH) was a major loser in the sector, falling 7.5% (-$16.59) to close at $203.40 with 273,634 shares moving. The stock traded between $200.74 and $224.99. The stock has been losing steam over the last month, dipping $69.19 (-25.4%) from a price of $272.59 on April 11, 2012.
Gold Resource Corporation (GORO) rose 3.5% to close at $25.49, crossing its 50-day moving average of $25.47. Meanwhile, Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM) dropped 1.2% to close at $37.73, moving below its 200-day moving average or $39.44.
AngloGold Ashanti (AU) rose 4.7% to close at $34.07, approaching its 50-day moving average of $34.66. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $40.63. Cytec Industries (NP) fell 1.5% to close at $63.05, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $62.18. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $24.47.
Airgas (ARG) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $93.05 to top the previous high of $92.40.
Renewable Energy Group (REGI) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $7.94 to fall below the previous low of $8.37.
