The Basic Materials sector (XLB) showed little change during trading today while the S&P 500 rose 0.7%.
Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE) was one of the sector's big losers, as its price dropped 11.5% (-$1.03) to close at $7.92. 2.1 million shares of the stock moved. The stock traded in a range of $7.72 to $8.60. The stock has been falling in the last two months, down $3.84 (-32.7%) from a price of $11.76 on February 28, 2012.
Clearwater Paper (CLW) rose 5% to close at $32.77, cross its 50-day moving average of $32.49 and 200-day moving average of $34.70. LSB Industries (LXU) declined 9.5% to close at $34.87, moving below its 50-day moving average of $38.22 and 200-day moving average of $35.27.
Randgold Resources (GOLD) rose 3.2% to close at $91.01, approaching its 50-day moving average of $93.03. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $103.73. The Dow Chemical Company (UFS) fell 3.4% to close at $34.85, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $34.21. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $87.51.
Increasing 6.5% (+88 cents) to close at $14.40, NL Industries (NL) was a major gainer in the sector. Today, 21,665 shares traded hands. The stock traded in a range of $13.55 to $14.63. Shares are up, having risen 90 cents (6.7%) from a price of $13.50 on April 19, 2012.
Praxair (PX) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $115.79 to top the previous high of $115.32.
