Week six closes out with an AFC East divisional matchup as the Miami Dolphins (0-4) come into MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Jets (2-3)
The Dolphins, coming off their bye week and already reeling from their 0-4 start are dealing with more bad news with the loss of starting Quarterback Chad Henne to season ending shoulder injury.
Quarterback Matt Moore will get the start tonight, but look for the Dolphins to keep the ball on the ground and exploit the suddenly porous Jet’s 26th ranked rush defense which is giving up 134.8 yards per game. Rookie RB Daniel Thomas has 202 yards on 41 carries but has missed two games due to a nagging hamstring injury so is averaging 101 yards a game and 4.9 yards per carry. If the Dolphins can get Reggie Bush back in the mix they could have a big game on the ground.
WR Brandon Marshall made waves stating that he wants to get so fired up that he gets ejected from the game. His 313 yards on 22 catches is middle of the pack in the league but a little fire might be the thing he needs starting opposite of Jets corners Darelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. Head Coach Tony Sparano is on the hot seat with a seven game losing streak from the end of last season and there is chatter that he might not survive an 0-5 start.
FOX Business has evaluated the win/loss and stock market statistics over the past 20 seasons of Monday night NFL games and come up with a Monday Night Markets (MNM) score for each team based on their record and the prior week’s market activity. Let’s take a look at what the markets have to say.
The major indexes had solid gains with the Dow Industrials closing out the week up 4.88%, up for three weeks straight and the largest percent gain since the week ending July 1. The S&P 500 was also up posting a gain of 5.98% now up two weeks in a row with the best gain since the week ended July 1. The market rally was predominately driven by continued optimism that the Euro zone bailout would receive approval.
Over the past 20 years, the Dolphins have played 37 Monday night games and based on our calculations, have a Monday night rank of 0.364 when the Dow closes the prior week up and 0.417 when the S&P 500 is up giving them a MNM rank for this week of 0.391.
During the same 20-year period, the Jets have played 19 Monday night games and have a rank of 0.467 when the Dow is up and 0.438 when the S&P 500 is up giving them an MNM rank this week of 0.453.
Monday Night Markets picks the New York Jets at home.
