WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Tuesday reiterated his call for China to accelerate the pace of appreciation of the yuan, saying the current valuation is unfair to U.S. companies and that a faster rise in China's currency is also in China's economic interest.
In an interview recorded Tuesday just hours before Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here on an official visit and the Treasury secretary meets with his counterpart, Vice Premier Wang Qishan, Geithner said he would have frank and candid discussions with the Chinese officials about U.S. concerns. The interview was with National Public Radio.
Although Geithner said he isn't expecting dramatic change in Beijing's policies overnight, he is seeking commitments from Chinese officials that they will move forward on issues such as currency, protecting intellectual-property rights and market access.
