Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) unveiled Monday its new Xfinity TV app, enabling those digital customers to watch TV shows and movies directly on their iPad.
The first version of the application will be rolled on the Apple (NASDAQ:APPL) computer tab, providing Xfinity customers with the ability to change TV channels, search through a TV guide and view shows and movies on their mobile device.
The app was demonstrated Monday at a Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, at which time Comcast officials said the first version of the app will become available in the iTunes Store sometime this week.
“This Xfinity TV app is part of a much larger effort to reinvent the way consumers interact with their televisions by transforming the way they search, navigate, discover and share entertainment,” said Neil Smit, president of Comcast Cable.
Comcast said the app will also allow customers to program their DVRs to record TV shows and movies and sort them based on certain filters, from networks and genres to HD content.
The ability to actually watch movies and shows directly on the iPad will become available in December, the company said.
At first, the Philadelphia-based company's app will offer “hit shows and blockbuster movies from the top premium networks,” and will then expand through a series of updates to eventually include “thousands of additional entertainment choices,” as well as the remote control feature.
"This week’s launch on the iTunes Store is the first in a series of scheduled app releases Comcast’s development team will deliver for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch," the company said in a statement. “Comcast will launch several Android apps this year and also plans to offer apps with similar functionality on as many different devices as possible including BlackBerry and other smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs.”
The cable giant first delved into the rapidly popularizing app rave last year, launching a free version of its communications app on the iTunes Store that enabled customers to view email, voicemail and manage calendars.
