Freight railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming (NYSE:GWR) said Wednesday its September and third-quarter traffic increased on higher carloads of farm & food products in Australia.

Third-quarter traffic was up 10.8% to 217,290 carloads from 196,263 in the earlier-year period, driven by 60.2% improvement in its farm & food shipments and assisted by a 26.4% increase in chemicals and plastics carloads.

September carloads surged 13.4% to 72,121, compared with 63,607 in the same month last year.

Last month's traffic was pushed higher by 74.8% growth in its farm segment due to shipment gains in Australia, as well as a 31.4% improvement in chemicals and plastics, pushed up on increased shipments in its Illinois and Southern regions.
