President Barack Obama on Thursday said Russian President Vladimir Putin must recognize Petro Poroshenko as the new president of Ukraine and engage with him. Speaking alongside U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron at a press conference in Brussels, Obama said "we have no choice but to respond" to Russia if Putin continues to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty. Obama was also asked about a U.S. case against BNP Paribas , in which the French bank could face a fine of $10 billion over allegations the bank evaded U.S. sanctions. Obama said he has told French President Francois Hollande that U.S. presidents do not "meddle in prosecutions" and he will read about the outcome "in the newspapers just like everybody else."
