Small Business of the Day: Careerminds

Who: President Raymond Lee and COO Justin Shakelman @careerminds

What: A virtual outplacement company

When: 2007

How: Lee had worked in human resources for about 18 years prior to starting Careerminds. When the economy shifted, he saw the opportunity to offer outplacement to businesses in a more web-based approach.

"The model is very rich with benefits," Lee said. "Our product is all web-based and virtual, and all coaching and career consulting is done over the phone. Users also have access online to our career management system."

Careerminds works with mid-sized companies to Fortune 500s at 30% to 70% lower cost, due to its web model, Shakelman claimed.

Where: Newark, Del.

In his own words: "We are placing about 50% faster than the national average of 40 weeks [of unemployment]. "We get people back to work in about 17 weeks."
