The voluntary recall from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and battery developer Mophie warns that the battery’s integrated circuit switch can overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers.
The battery, which comes in black, blue or red, consists of a lithium polymer battery built into a plastic case designed to snap onto the back of an iPod Touch 4G music player.
Mophie said it has received 110 reports of its Juice Pack Air external battery becoming warm to the touch, 44 report of the battery deforming and nine reports of minor burns.
Only batteries with serial numbers that have the first five characters of TR113 through TR120 are included in the recall. The company urges consumers to stop them immediately.
Those batteries have been on the market since April 2011 with a price tag of about $50.
