Twittering Small Business of the Day: So Chick! Handbags & Embroidery

Who: Melissa strong, 28, @TheSoChickChick

What: So Chick! Handbags & Embroidery. Strong hand-sews purses, clutches, diaper bags and more and sells them online.

When: Strong began her online business in August 2010.

Where: The business itself is based online, but Strong lives in Havelock, N.C. with her two daughters and husband, a former Marine.

Why:  Strong became a stay-at-home mom after she gave birth to her second daughter, and decided to turn her hobby into a business in 2010. A self-taught seamstress, she said she began to get serious about creating her bags in 2008, and became hooked after making herself a diaper bag and seeing the results. From there, she said, orders started pouring in from friends and family, and she decided it was time to start making some cash off of her hobby.

In her words: "The final nudge was to spend more time with my kids, but also do something to feed my need to create," Strong said. "Fingers crossed, I hope to one day have my own fabric boutique where I can teach others how to sew."
